Troubleshooting

Tested solutions for common hardware wallet problems. Connection issues, firmware update failures, and sync problems across all major brands.

5 in-depth guides
Open rating formula

Hardware wallets are reliable devices, but connection issues, firmware update failures, and sync problems do happen. These guides provide tested solutions — not copy-pasted forum advice — for the most common issues across all major brands.

Each troubleshooting guide follows a structured approach: identify the exact problem, check the most likely causes first, then walk through the fix step by step. We include specific instructions for each wallet brand where the process differs.

If your issue involves a potential security concern (like a tampered device or suspicious firmware), check our security guides first — some "problems" are actually warning signs that shouldn't be bypassed.

Wallets That Defend Against These Threats

Reading about threats is step one. Step two is choosing a wallet built to handle them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Troubleshooting and hardware wallet security

My hardware wallet is not connecting to my computer — what should I try?
Try these steps in order: 1) Use a different USB cable (cheap cables often lack data lines). 2) Try a different USB port, preferably directly on the computer, not a hub. 3) Close other apps that might claim the USB device (Ledger Live, Trezor Suite, browsers). 4) Restart your computer. 5) Check if the device needs a firmware update. 6) On Linux, check udev rules for your wallet brand.
My hardware wallet firmware update failed — is my crypto safe?
Your crypto is safe as long as you have your seed phrase. A failed firmware update may leave the device in bootloader mode. Most wallets can recover: reconnect the device, reopen the companion app, and retry the update. If the device is bricked, you can restore your funds on a new device using your seed phrase. Never attempt firmware updates without verifying your backup first.
My wallet shows the wrong balance — what is happening?
Common causes: the companion app has not fully synced with the blockchain, you are looking at the wrong account or derivation path, or the app is showing a cached balance. Solutions: force a full resync in the app settings, check that you are using the correct account type (e.g., Native SegWit vs Legacy for Bitcoin), and verify your balance on a blockchain explorer using your public address.
Ledger Live or Trezor Suite is not recognizing my device — how to fix?
Ensure you have the latest version of the app. On Windows, install the manufacturer USB drivers. On Mac, allow the app in System Preferences > Privacy > Input Monitoring. Try a different USB cable and port. If using a browser-based interface, check that WebUSB is enabled. As a last resort, uninstall and reinstall the companion app — this does not affect your funds.
