Social Recovery
Social Recovery allows users to regain access to their crypto wallet through approvals from trusted guardians or contacts, bypassing traditional seed phrases.
What Is a Social Recovery?
A Social Recovery is a security feature in cryptocurrency wallets. It enables users to regain access to their funds without a traditional seed phrase. Instead, trusted contacts, known as guardians, approve the recovery process. Synonyms include guardian recovery and trusted contacts recovery.
Users set up social recovery during wallet creation. They select 2-5 guardians and share encrypted recovery shares with them. To recover, the user starts the process on a new device. Guardians receive notifications and approve via their own secure apps. Threshold cryptography requires approvals from a majority, such as 2 out of 3 guardians. This uses multi-party computation (MPC) to reconstruct the private key securely without exposing it fully.
Social Recovery matters because seed phrases pose risks. Users often lose them or fall victim to phishing. This method eliminates single points of failure. It distributes trust across guardians, improving security for non-technical users. Wallets like Argent and Loopring implement it effectively.
Key characteristics include:
- Threshold approvals: Needs multiple guardians, not all.
- No seed phrase storage: Reduces loss or theft risks.
- Social trust model: Relies on personal relationships, so select guardians wisely.
- Revocable guardians: Users can change them periodically.
Caveats exist. Poor guardian choices invite coercion attacks. Always verify guardian identities during setup.
Recovery is the process of restoring access to a cryptocurrency wallet using its seed phrase or mnemonic backup if the original wallet is lost or inaccessible.

Example 1: Initial Wallet Setup
Bob creates an Argent wallet on Ethereum. During setup, he chooses his sister and two trusted colleagues as guardians. The wallet generates encrypted recovery shares, which Bob shares with them via secure messaging apps. No seed phrase is created or stored.
Example 2: Recovering After Device Loss
Bob loses his smartphone. On a new device, he starts the social recovery process in Argent. His guardians receive notifications on their apps. Two out of three approve the request using threshold cryptography. Bob regains full wallet access without exposing private keys.
Example 3: Updating Guardians in Loopring Wallet
Carol uses Loopring wallet with social recovery. After a year, she revokes her ex-partner as a guardian and adds her brother. She verifies identities in-app and distributes new encrypted shares, maintaining security without downtime.
Example 4: Emergency Recovery During Travel
- Scenario: Dana travels abroad and her phone is stolen.
- Action: She logs into a trusted computer, initiates guardian recovery.
- Result: Her three guardians (parents and best friend) approve remotely via their wallet apps. Majority threshold met; Dana accesses funds securely.
